Why

Sawhorse Acres?

It began when I was quite little. I was a concrete kid. My backyard was 25 by 75 foot, but I dreamed of riding horses and rescuing animals. I dreamed of one day buying land and letting it grow naturally. My dad would take me walking through neighborhood parks and county woods. And all along the way, he reminded me that we were just visitors to the land. That we needed to protect the land, the water and the animals, fish and birds that lived there. He was my first ecology teacher.

Dad couldn't buy me a farm but he could help me with my dreams. One day he asked me to come out to the backyard. He had made a sawhorse and across its back he had laid colorful blankets in a makeshift saddle. He had looped a sturdy rope around the front-my reins.

I jumped on. My dad said to me, "Use your imagination and you can ride anywhere on your sawhorse, Kashka"

And the place I saw on that very first sawhorse ride was the land I actually stepped onto 40 years later. And here is its story. Welcome to Sawhorse Acres.
